Proper Storage Procedures
Lab procedures for receiving, logging, storing and tracking research peptide inventory at 2–8°C and -20°C.
Receiving inspection
On arrival, confirm the package is cold, the seal is intact, and the vial label batch code matches the dispatch note. Photograph anything anomalous before opening.
Logging inventory
Record: compound, batch code, supplier, receipt date, vial mass, storage location, opened date once reconstituted. Tie the entry to its COA PDF in your LIMS or shared drive.
Stock rotation
FIFO. Use older lyophilised stock first within its stability window, and reconstitute only as needed.
The paperwork that keeps storage auditable
A storage procedure becomes auditable when three records exist: what arrived (batch number, certificate reference, arrival condition), where it is (location tag — freezer, shelf, rack), and what happened to it (opening dates, aliquot events, disposals). None of this needs laboratory software; a bound notebook or a simple spreadsheet satisfies it.
The value shows up at the moments you can't predict: an audit query months later, a collaborator inheriting the project, or an anomalous result that needs tracing back to a specific vial and its handling history. Labs that keep the three records resolve those moments in minutes; labs that don't re-derive them from memory, badly.
Frequently asked questions
What temperature does a typical lab fridge run at?+
2–8°C is the standard target for reconstituted research peptides.
Do I need a dedicated fridge for research peptides?+
No — a designated shelf or sealed container inside an existing lab fridge is sufficient, provided the container is labelled and the temperature is reasonably stable.
How should aliquots be labelled?+
Batch number, compound, concentration, and the date of reconstitution — enough that any colleague can trace an aliquot to its certificate and its age without asking.
