Research Compound Basics: Beginner's Guide | Bio Mech

A beginner-friendly primer on research peptide compounds — what a COA is, how purity is measured and what laboratories verify before sourcing.

Reading this research reference

The information below concerns the research subject, not proof of the identity or performance of a supplied material. Check the original sources and your laboratory’s requirements; product documentation must be assessed separately for the exact batch.

What a COA is

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) documents the tests performed on a specific batch — typically HPLC purity, mass-spec identity, peptide content and water content.

How purity is measured

HPLC separates the compound from impurities; the peak area attributable to the target sequence is reported as % purity. 99%+ is the modern baseline for research peptides.

What else to check

Lot-matched documentation, consistent batch quality over time, and clear research-only labelling.

Why independent verification is the load-bearing step

Every downstream decision in research sourcing inherits the quality of its verification. A protocol built on a mis-labelled compound produces results that are internally consistent and externally meaningless; a stock prepared from a certificate that describes the wrong batch propagates a quantitative error through every dilution. That is why the verification step — matching vial to certificate, certificate to independent laboratory — is load-bearing in a way that almost nothing else in the supply chain is.

The mechanics are learnable in an afternoon: read the HPLC purity line with the chromatogram it came from, check the mass-spec molecular weight against the theoretical value, confirm the batch number on the vial matches the report, and confirm the report is dated and signed by a named laboratory. A beginner who can do those four checks knows more about their material than most buyers in this market.

The beginner's shopping list

A first peptide order that supports good practice has four components. The compound itself, in a lot-matched kit rather than loose vials, so one certificate covers everything. Bacteriostatic water in sufficient quantity for the study. Sterile consumables — needles, aliquot tubes, labels. And storage: a sealed container with desiccant for the freezer, plus a fridge thermometer.

Frequently asked questions

What should my very first order include?+

A lot-matched kit of the target compound, bacteriostatic water, sterile needles and aliquot tubes, and a storage container with desiccant. That covers the protocol needs without capital equipment.

How do I read a COA if I'm new to this?+

Start with the four-point check: batch number match, HPLC main-peak value with chromatogram, mass-spec identity against theoretical mass, and the laboratory's name and date. The COA guide on this site walks through each field in detail.
